General Summary

The Ecosystem Sr. Principal is responsible for VSP’s strategy, execution, and engagement with relevant innovation ecosystems. This position is responsible for identifying, assessing, and activating innovation opportunities that will have a clear impact on the future success of the organization and the various populations we serve. They will act as VSP’s primary point of contact between the ecosystems and internal VSP stakeholders. Externally, they will work with venture capital firms, incubators/accelerators, entrepreneurs, and other corporations to develop technologies, companies, and management teams that help us to strategically grow and transform the business. They will actively engage with partners in the ecosystem, maintain a presence, build personal relationships, and manage interactions with ecosystem partners. 

Essential Functions

Serve as the primary face VSP’s Global Innovation Center to help drive community growth, strength, and effectiveness

Use experience and connections with Venture Capital and/or startups to collaborate with incubators, accelerators and other entrepreneurial support organizations

Identify top-tier deal resources and conduct outreach to VCs, entrepreneurs, incubators, and more to identify innovation opportunities

Identify and evaluate promising technologies and business models applicable to current areas of interest for the enterprise

Define and prioritize the use-cases and market segments that closely align with VSP’s

Work directly with Innovation Domain Principals to execute focused scouting on specific innovation topics, facilitate introductions and support shaping of partner

Gather information from the ecosystems to assess market opportunities and feasibility of innovation concepts

Develop compelling product strategies, competitive analysis, roadmaps, and product requirements documents (PRDs) to communicate VSP’s vision

Develop third-party engagement strategies within specific ecosystems that support the innovation strategy and priorities

Manage budget for formal partnerships, ecosystem marketing events and related activities 

Develop enterprise database to document current and potential partner engagements

Structure and negotiate business agreements with ecosystem partners to advance innovations, including joint development agreements for Proofs of Concept/Proofs of Value (POC/POVs)

Lead idea screening, concept testing/optimization, and pipeline development efforts.

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:


Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related field; or related experience. MBA strongly preferred

Minimum 12 years' experience in relevant topics including corporate or institutional venture capital, startup accelerator, innovation and/or incubator settings

High proficiency in concept testing and validation, user research, or other related experimentation methodologies

Ability to create and develop strong relationships with senior leaders at start-ups, accelerators, and venture capital firms within an ecosystem

Extensive experience structuring and implementing multi-party collaborative/joint development agreements

Experience managing teams in cross-entity collaborative work and/or partner management


Working Conditions / Physical Demands

The working environment is generally favorable.  Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust etc.
