General Summary

Manages and controls the financial accounting and financial reporting functions, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, fixed assets, bank reconciliations, and financial statement preparation and review.  Oversees monthly close process for multiple locations including international sites.  Coordinates financial audits.

Essential Functions

Manage the general ledger close process of multiple locations and lines of business to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting principles and procedures; resolve complex accounting issues including consolidations


Direct the preparation and review of consolidated financial statements and other financial reporting


Coordinate and prepare for financial statement audits as required by the banks, clients, and the board or directors


Recommend and implement changes in financial policies and procedures that will serve VSP’s needs and provide continuous quality improvments


Monitor established internal controls and implement new ones to ensure proper compliance and protection of VSP’s interests


Provide the Controller and business parteners with the appropriate financial and operating information necessary to assist in the financial management and control of the company


Assist with planning and implementing changes in the financial systems


Assist in the preparation and ongoing maintenance of the company’s annual budget


Work with VSP’s Internal Audit department to identify areas for improvement, collectively agree upon appropriate corrective action,and faciliate mediation efforts


Monitor performance of direct reports; provide prompt and objective coaching and counseling; conduct performance reviews, approve performance appraisals initiated by direct reports, and recommend salary increases


Assure effective communications are maintained within areas of responsibility; where appropriate, inform employees as to plans and progress; conduct employee discussion sessions at regular and frequent intervals


Prioritize, assign, and distribute work of the department personnel to ensure responsibility is at the appropriate level and team member skills are developed to support the department’s business needs


Identify, consolidate, and prioritize training needs and coordinate training programs that address the department’s business needs


Monitor unit’s turnover, productivity and overall performance to ensure adequate staffing and performance that meet department standards


Participate in the interviewing and hiring process for open positions within the department to ensure most qualified candidates are selected


Develop the department budget; monitor expenses to ensure unit costs are within established levels


Coordinate with other divisions to facilitate special requests and resolve workflow or production issues


Evaluate workflow processes, recommend and implement procedural and systems changes to deliver quality service to the department’s customers


Provide direction to staff on strategic and departmental projects, including financial and business analysis, budgeting, accounting, and reporting


Manage multiple financial projects with competing deadlines simultaneously

Job Specifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related degree


Certified Public Accountant


Minimum eight years progressive financial accounting experience


Minimum eight years in insurance, healthcare, financial services, or public accounting


Minimum eight years of leadership experience; demonstrated leadership skills with past responsibility for managing and developing people


Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles


Excellent verbal and written communication skills


Clean credit history as reported by credit report


Ability to regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment in the performance of his/her job duties


Working Conditions / Physical Demands

The working environment is generally favorable.  Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust etc.
