Underwriting Analyst/Data Scientist, VSP Vision Care

General Summary

With minimal supervision, performs review and complex analysis of rate setting factors using historical and projected data and makes recommendations to achieve PLR target. Completes detailed analysis as requested by VSP management in support of setting strategic direction.

Essential Functions

Formulates objectives and scope to develop management reporting and auditing using a variety of complex sources, including mainframe download files and databases.

 

Provides detailed analysis and recommendations to support client and/or product financial decisions for VSP management.

 

Develops and prepares reports that outline VSP’s client administrative and claim financial results on all Vision Care business and cross-sections of Vision Care business.

 

Develops and maintains automated rating tools to ensure maximum efficiency and targeted results. Develops and implements new product pricing to achieve company PLR target.

 

Maintains in-depth knowledge of underwriting systems, both automated and manual, as well as dependencies to the system. Maintains in-depth knowledge of other systems, such as product, revenue, and claims, that directly impact underwriting objectives.

 

Provide intradivisional analysis and reporting for complex client financial results in support of financial and/or regulatory reporting.

 

Identifies opportunities for improvement and develops/recommends solutions to streamline systems and processes ensuring maximum efficiency and appropriate utilization of resources.

 

Provides planning and analysis for future system enhancement due to product/program changes. Works with business partners to define and implement program requirements.

 

Participates in project teams dealing with changes that primarily affect underwriting systems requiring navigation through complex situations and with multiple stakeholders.

 

Documents program structure and system enhancements and changes to ensure system and business processes are current.

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:

 

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field or equivalent business analysis experience

 

Eight years of underwriting or related experience

 

FOCUS or similar experience

 

Proven analytical and problem-solving skills

 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

Proficient in spreadsheet applications 

 

Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail


Ability to multi-task and work under strict deadlines

 

Strong business aptitude, analytical, and problem-solving skills

 

Strong work ethic and flexible work style

 

Ability to regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of his/her job duties.

 

Clean credit history as reported by credit report

Preferred Skills

Comfortable manipulating and analyzing big data sets to discover patterns and provide actionable insight.

 

Excellent technical abilities, as they are responsible for evaluating sets of information and implementing appropriate solutions.

 

Applicable technical experience and skills can include the following: programming and coding; ability to translate unstructured information into structured information; Excel, Access, SQL, Cognos, Salesforce and other system familiarity.

 

Effective project management abilities in order to oversee multiple projects, as well as the ability to serve as a SME for cross-training.

The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust etc.
