Senior Director-Global Innovation, VSP Vision Care

General Summary

Manage the processes to discover, create and mature ideas into commercial solutions that accelerate growth and performance throughout the enterprise. And, develops partnerships with industry influencers, start-ups, academics, businesses and financial partners to maximize the pace and value of innovation. Regularly interacts with business unit executives, business partners and strategic alliances to develop innovation capabilities, tools and processes within an environment of creativity, problem solving and design thinking.

Essential Functions

Leverage and develop innovative solutions to enhance business operations, expand markets, and drive sustainable growth


Work with business partners to assess and establish priorities for innovation, developing a curated portfolio of innovation initiatives


Collect and assess ideas within the organization and across a broad spectrum of industry sources to align and enable strategic capabilities and business performance; responsible for researching and evaluating innovation concepts in a disciplined manner to maintain pipeline of opportunities and apply tools and defined methodologies to prioritize them (including testing, qualifying, resources, funding etc.)


Oversee innovation programs that enhance overall customer experience as well as generate additional revenues, drive operational efficiency and grow market share


Assist in resource planning, cost estimation, budget development and cost control for innovation programs


Collaborate with Legal and Finance on matters of Intellectual Property protections and investment opportunities within the innovation portfolio


Interface with prospective commercial venturing partners, start ups and early stage companies and develop commercial engagements that foster innovation deliverables
Review and oversee updating of the various Innovation Portfolio processes and controls


Manage and develop team talent and performance through creativity, communication, and accountability

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:


Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience


Minimum of 15 years of management experience with responsibilities for hiring, training, assigning work and managing performance of direct reports


Experience around systems-thinking particularly around new technologies


Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to influence and collaborate among stakeholders


Strong presentation skills and executive presence


Experience managing local and remote teams 


Experience in commercialization of innovation programs in diverse markets


Ability to lead at the enterprise level

Short Description


Experience in information technology, healthcare, retail, consulting, and/or consumer product 

Five years of innovation experience

Experience running a corporate innovation center 

Experience with systems-thinking particularly around new technologies

Experience managing local and remote teams

Experience in commercialization of innovation programs in diverse markets

Experience leading at the enterprise level
